Dear Ruth
We are very saddened to learn of Jim’s passing. You two were like “peas in a pod”, always together and enjoying one another.
We met at the Bowling Alley in town many years ago, but we will always remember the unscheduled New Years Eve dinners we enjoyed together at White Point.
May your happiest and most special memories of Jim remain forever in your heart, and God bless you daily with peace and good health.
Sincerely,
Joyce and Ozzie Wile

As an inexperienced teacher in 1974, I couldn't possibly have had a more sincere, patient and kinder mentor than Mr. Olmstead.
With fond memories, much gratitude and condolences to the entire Olmstead family,

So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. Jim and Ruth were dear friends of my parents Polly and Gushie Naugler. Jim was also a very respected high school principal to many of the kids growing up in Bridgewater and as discussed last year on our 50th reunion we certainly tested him by times! All the best to Ruth and the rest of the family in this difficult time. Mike Naugler

I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Olmstead's death. He and Ruth were such close friends of my parents. My heart goes out to Ruth, Judy, Carolyn, Paul and everyone in the family. I have a little story. Mr. Olmstead actually taught me how to water ski when I was 12 years old. My mother took us to the lake to visit Mr. & Mrs. Olmstead. He offered to take anyone who was interested water skiing. I was keen, but had no swimsuit and had never skied. He gave me a bright blue 1 piece of Judy's. Although I had a great first ski, I had to decide whether continuing to ski would provide more joy than continuing to have the swimsuit grow with every pull!
I have often chuckled about that day and wondered how many others enjoyed the same fun.

My condolences to Aunt Ruth, Paul, Carolyn, and Judy. My father Vaughn and James were very close and inseparable as boys growing up. I remember very well their hunting trips up into northern Québec, like two teenagers being cut loose to high adventures adding bragging rights of successful hunting. Camp pictures of life on the tundra gave veracity to much of their adventurous claims. Uncle James and his brother Vaughn are once again together and forever in the presence of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit for all eternity.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Olmstead’s passing. He was such an integral part of my teenage years not just as my Principal. I am truly thankful that some of us were able to have a visit with him and Ruth last summer. His memory was better than mine as he recalled my one and only disastrous attempt at water skiing when I was 17! He will be fondly remembered. My condolences to Ruth, Judy, Paul and Carolyn.

I am so sorry to hear the news of Mr.. Olmstead's passing.
I have a single memory to share as this moment was a defining point in my life.
My family had just come to Canada after fleeing Uganda in 1972. We were sent to Bridgewater, NS as in the words of the immigration officials, "They have a great school."
On our third day in the country, on a cold late October day, I presented myself to Mr. Olmstead. He was patient and heard my story. he asked me a few questions about my past schooling and read my previous school reports. He decided to walk me to Grade 11A class and gently knocked. He introduced me to the class and gave a background of how I have ended up in Grade 11A all the way from Kampala, Uganda. Mrs Olsen guided me to an empty seat. His parting words, which I will never forget, were, "Take care of him!" in his gentle, but firm tone. I will always remember that kindness and care. I felt safe for the first time.
It was lovely to meet him last year.

After 42 years, we had a lot of adventures and memories. But one continual event, year after year, was a cocktail and cribbage, a couple of hours at a time. That is what I’ll take forward - he even won a few. A great guy.
