Obituary of J. David F. Theakston
J. David "Nip" F. Theakston
79, of Bridgewater, Sunday, September 16th. He passed away peacefully, following a brief illness, at QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Halifax, David was the son of the late Harold and Francis Theakston. He was a graduate of Dalhousie Law School, and a member of the Dal Tigers football team, inducted into the Dalhousie Sports Hall of Fame. It was with the Tigers that he became known as “Nip,” for his speed and agility on the field. He loved his profession, practicing law in Bridgewater for over 30 years. David Theakston was also a community leader who seemed to know nearly everybody in town. He was integral in founding the Bridgewater Swimming Pool, he sat on the school board, and was a member of Kiwanis. Always active and generous, he was a devoted husband, father and gramps. Dave could build just about anything, to w which his fully outfitted home workshop, his cottage on the LaHave River, and the many friends he built things for will attest. Often, he collaborated on projects with his beloved wife, Marge, an artist in her own right. David is predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Marjorie, their daughter, Joanne Marie (shortly after birth), and his brother, Donald. He is survived by loving daughters, Nancie Theakston Phipps (Don Veinish) of Bedford, Heather Moffett (Keith Moffett) of Toronto, adoring grandchildren Aiden, Seth, David and Olivia, as well as many nieces and nephews, and countless friends. The family wishes to thank all who were so supportive during his illness, and express its heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of VGH, 5A. A memorial service will be held 2:00pm, Thursday September 20, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater. No visitation. Family flowers only, please. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
