Obituary of Reuben Humby
Rev. Reuben Crewe Humby
86, Dayspring, Lunenburg Co., passed away September 29, 2003 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born February 14, 1917 in Summerville, Nfld, he was the eldest son of the late Edward and Rebecca (Crewe) Humby. After receiving his early education in Summerville, he received his Teacher’s Certificate from Memorial College, St. John’s, Nfld and taught in the province for 5 years. He was received as a candidate for the United Church Ministry in 1939 and served as Lay Minister in Newfoundland and Labrador for 4 years. He received his arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1948. During his study years he served as student minister in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Cape Breton. It was at this time, as a supply minister in Mulgrave that he met his wife of 55 years, Anna Digdon. He received his Masters of Divinity from Pine Hill in 1950. He was ordained by the Newfoundland Conference at Grand Falls, Nfld, in this same year. After ordination, he and Anna, his partner in ministry, served the pastoral charges of Heart’s Content, Nfld for 2 years; West Bay, NS for 6 years and Florence / Little Bras D’or, NS for 22 years. In 1967, he was nominated and received the Canadian Centennial Medal. After retiring in 1980, he and Anna resided in Dayspring. Although retired, he was a very active member of Bridgewater United Church, Bridgewater. Through his faith, he touched the hearts of many and will be dearly missed. Surviving are his wife the former Anna Digdon, twin sons, Wylie (Violet), Bridgewater and Wayne (Susan), Bradford, Ont; daughter Linda (Dave) Kay, Timberlea. Sister Joyce (Hewlett). Granddaughter Cheryl; grandsons, Gregg, Chad, Stephen, Kelsey and Jesse. Great granddaughter, Megan. Predeceased by brothers, George, Ambrose, Joseph and infant daughter, Rebecca Ann. Visitation for family and friends will be 2 – 4, 7 -9 p.m., Wednesday at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral 2 p.m., Thursday in Bridgewater United Church. Rev. Ivan Norton officiating. Burial will follow in Dayspring Cemetery, Dayspring. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
