Obituary of Lilla Smith
Lilla Madeline Smith (Bowers)
Of New Bedford, Ma., formerly of Cherry Hill, Lunenburg County, passed away January 23, 2003 in the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center after a period of declining health. Born in Cherry Hill, she was a daughter of the late George and Rachel (Conrad) Bowers and lived in New Bedford since 1954. A member of Grace Episcopal Church, she had been active with the Altar Guild for 25 years, the Episcopal Church Women and served as Treasurer for the church Thrift Shop since its inception until recently and volunteered on baked goods table for the annual church Bittersweet Bazaar. A former resident of Gloucester, Ma, she was a member of the Seashore Lodge of Rebeccas. She is survived by her son, George and his wife Jacqueline Smith; her daughter, Marlene and her husband Ronald Renaud, both of New Bedford; a sister, Celia Spittle, Cherry Hill; 3 grandchildren, Heather Hagerty, George M. Smith and Nicole Renaud; great grandchildren, Timothy and Holly Hagerty. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett A. Smith. Funeral service will be held 11:30am Saturday in the Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St., New Bedford. Funeral arrangements will then be transferred to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater where visitation will be held Tuesday from 1 to 2pm with a graveside service being held at 3pm in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Cherry Hill, Rev. Gary Alcock officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
