Pete and I attended grad school together at Rutgers. We were inseparable and I shared so many wonderful moments with him - my first time driving in snow (nearly ending up in a river!), housesitting for a professor during a snowstorm, having pizza at TaTa's and many, many beers and deep conversations. He was the most kind, gentle, and loving man and one of the most special I've ever met. Even years after we lost touch (except for the odd Facebook message), there isn't a time I think of him that I don't smile. My heart hurts at learning of this loss, and I send love and strength to his family. He was a light in the world, and we are the richer for having had him in it. Luz para tu espírito, queridísimo Pete, and see you on the other side. Good journey to you. xoxoxoxo always.

I was so shocked to hear of Pete's passing. I was one of his Villanova students and always think of him fondly when I look back on my time in Italy. He was an easy-going man with a good sense humor and one who always brought stimulating conversation to the table. We spent many long train rides during program excursions discussing Italian culture and history, literature, and philosophy, and it was a joy learning so much from him through those conversations. Pete was a cool and "groovy" dude who truly seemed to live life to the fullest, and I'm so grateful for the time I got to know him. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

I was so shocked and surprised to hear of Pete’s passing. I can only express my sincere condolences to his family and hope they can find some comfort at such a difficult time. As a member of the Board of Trustees at Ross Farm Museum when Pete was hired, I was impressed with his enthusiasm and vision for our museum. We spoke often about ideas he wanted to pursue there and now, unfortunately, those plans will not materialize. I hope you, his family, will take some comfort in knowing what a great guy he was!

I still can’t believe it!
He was the first teacher I met and talked to in Urbino back in 2009.
With him I had taken the interview for the "placement test", I remember everything about that talk…
I was amazed because he knew my town (Cerignola, in Puglia), then he told me that he had a friend from Cerignola who had even made him taste some typical gastronomic products and we ended up talking about this.
It is hard to forget his smile, his humor, his willingness, his listening to others, the music with which he called us into the classroom at the beginning of class (I often followed the music to find the classroom), his lectures, the stick he used to indicate on the slides and with which he sometimes walked on the street, the chats with him, the mornings and afternoons that he dedicated me to the CLA to make conversation and make listening tests when I was in trouble...
I feel very lucky to have known him! I will miss him! Goodbye Prof!
My deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family and to all those who have had the good fortune to be close to him.
May there be comfort in knowing that a person so special will never be forgotten!

I knew Peter Cullen for most of his life, from his first days at Dalhousie University until his position at the Ross Farm. He did an MA thesis for me on rural bandits in the Tuscan mountains that was both erudite and full of humour and life. The sole criticism by colleagues was that footnotes required periods at the end. We still imagine him in his great hiking boots tramping through the woods and pastures of the Apennines, bandit country. I met his doctoral supervisor in Italy and read his doctoral dissertation before he defended it in Bari, on contraband. Later, I had the privilege of visiting him and Shelley in Urbino and lecturing to his economic history class. His students thought highly of him. It was natural that he should shepherd American students from Villanova University through the labyrinth of Italian educational institutions. He seemed to be a natural mentor.
As one of his classmates expressed it, Pete was one of the good ones, and we will all miss him.

My heart is completely broken.. I will never forget his professionality and dedication to his job. He was a great professor, but first, an immense human being. He is for sure one of the good memories i took with me from my University experience in Urbino. May his soul rest in peace and may God bless him forever. Goodbye prof!

I was a former student of Pete and always felt very lucky to have had the chance to know him and learn from him. He was so natural, always happy, humorous and nice to anyone; he made me fall even more in love with the American culture and way of being and living. He was simple in the sense that he was direct and pure, characteristics that most people are missing these days. He loved nature and animals, knowledge and life in general, and we, as students, loved him very much. He was easy to talk to and fun, much fun. I was shocked to hear he passed away, because he had the purest heart and one can never forget a pure and rare heart. You will always be in our hearts and we will forever remember our times together as the greatest of our university years. Thank you for making life easier and funnier for us back in the days, and thank you for being so special and unique. May your soul and smile keep shining in peace. May your memory keep living through your loved ones. Until next time, Pete ♥️

I am so sorry and shocked to hear of Pete’s passing. I came to know him when he was hired as Director at Ross Farm Museum - I was on the Board of Trustees at the time. We had the opportunity to speak on a number of occasions about his vision for our museum and it was evident that he had long term goals for his participation in the improvement and exposure of Ross Farm. We are all less fortunate that Pete will not be here to fulfill his dreams.
