Obituary of Gerald "Gerry" Patrick Higney

The family of the late Gerald (Gerry) Patrick Higney are heartbroken to announce his passing on October 28^th, 2023. The night of the "Hunter Moon".

Loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Gerry was an avid reader, hunter, crossword puzzle king, lifelong Jeopardy fan, conversationalist, history buff, card shark, gracious host, and computer savvy. Gerry was born in Halifax, NS., on March 26^th, 1940, and raised in Dartmouth. He was the first-born child to Maurice Joseph and Ruby Geraldine (Naugle) Higney.

Spending a lot of time at his Higney grandparents’ home, Gerry was raised as a little brother to his nine Higney Aunts and Uncles. He started hunting at a very young age, bringing home rabbits and birds for his mother and grandmother's dinner tables. Many of his uncles served during WWII and the Korean War. The deep respect he had for his soldier and merchant marine uncles left him with a lifelong interest in military history, especially WWII.

Gerry married the love of his life, Hilda, in 1961. He had great relationships with all his Geddes family and discovered his love of deer hunting through his brothers in-law. Gerry and Hilda moved to Riverport, NS., in February 1964 when he began his lifelong career of scallop dragging. Settling in Middle LaHave, NS., they raised their family where his door was always open to family and friends.

Gerry is lovingly missed and honoured by his wife Hilda (Geddes) Higney; son, Brad; daughter, Cathy (John Langille); chosen son, Jim O'Hagan; siblings, Dave, Joe, John (Kelly Hislop), Karen (Tom Mercer), and May (Roy Negus); grandsons, Julien Langille, Matthew Higney, Joseph Langille, and Lucas Higney; great-grandsons, James Higney and Wesley Langille; and great-granddaughter, Claire Higney. Gerry was predeceased by his parents; youngest son, Sean Patrick; and sister Patricia.

Gerry was proud of his Irish heritage, had a quick wit and unsurpassed generosity. Family and friends will remember a shared drink with his many stories and recollections with vivid details and humor, highlighted with his sparkling eyes.

A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 115 Pleasant Street, Bridgewater, at 2pm on November 6th, 2023. Internment will follow the service at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery on St. Philip's Street. 

Donations can be made in Gerry's name to the Veteran's Unit of Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, or to a chairty of choice.
