Obituary of George Raymond Hirtle

George Raymond Hirtle

September 16, 1939 – July 15, 2024

George Raymond Hirtle passed away Monday July 15, 2024, at the age of 84 at the South Shore Regional Hospital. He was born on September 16, 1939, to Alice Lucretia (Zwicker) and George Elijah Hirtle of Lapland. He was the second youngest of 12 children.

George met his first love, Izelda (Sally) Oickle of Lower Northfield, and they were married in 1965. They had three beautiful children and two grandchildren. George worked in the woods and on the family farm all his life, always working hard tending to the farm animals, cutting and hauling out wood, driving trucks, tractors, and making lots of hay. But always while wearing his hard hat - Safety first! Sally was only given a few precious years with grandchildren Brent and Bryce before passing, she never had the pleasure to meet Savannah and Kameron.

George met the second love, Adrienne Martin of Middlefield, and they were married in 2006. With that came a wonderful extended family. Adrienne took great care of George, they enjoyed camping, music shows, playing cards, and getting together with friends. George sold a large amount of kindling over the years to many people which he thoroughly enjoyed.

In the later years with failing health, George needed more help at home. With the help of his home care workers, and Calvin and Ruth, they made it possible for him to stay at home as long as he did.

George is survived by his wife Adrienne Martin, Middlefield; children, Terry (Heather), Lapland, Bonnie (David) Baker, Lapland, and Tracy (Derrick) Pleasantville; grandchildren, Brent Baker (Shelby Freeman) Greenfield, Savannah and Kameron Wagner, Pleasantville; great-grandchildren, Addyline and Madison Baker, Greenfield; sister Arlene Hebb (Jimmy), Conquerall Bank; step-children, Calvin (Donna) Martin, Williamswood, Timmy (Kathy) Martin, Harrietsfield, and Ruth (Junior) Stoodley, Lucasville; many step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

George was predeceased by his parents, Alice and George Elijah; siblings, Beriah Hirtle, Ruby Fancy, Carl Hirtle, Lester Hirtle, Frank Hirtle, Greta Herman, Bruce Hirtle, Ervin Hirtle, Arthur Hirtle, and Georgina Wamback; first wife, Sally Hirtle; and grandson, Bryce.

Special thanks to Kendall for helping George in times of need. His care workers Jane, Emily, Angela, Calvin, and Ruth for their exceptional care and patience. To all the physicians, nurses, paramedics, and support staff at both Queens General and South Shore Regional Hospitals for their wonderful caring nature with George while in hospital. But in his final days, he just kept repeating he “wanted to go home”. We believe he meant heaven. Till we meet again...

Public visitation will be held on Friday, July 19th from 7:30-9pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held at 2pm, Saturday July 20th in Greenfield United Baptist Church, 5048 Hwy 210, Greenfield. Interment to follow in Lone Pine Cemetery, Lapland.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s name may be made to Lone Pine Cemetery, Greenfield United Baptist Church, or to the Lapland and District Fire Department. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where online condolences may be left at www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
