I was privileged to be Peter's roommate for 3 years at Brown. Many good memories including the time we were hitchhiking back to Brown after the football game at Yale (as a hazing prank, we had been stranded there). We made it part way before dark and found an unlocked car that we were able to use to get a little sleep. We rose early before anyone would need the car. As we continued on Sunday morning, an off-duty policeman came by. He laughed when we told him our names were Smith and Johnson. All ended well.
I enjoyed learning about rugby while watching Pete's games...all those big guys with the small but quick Pete out on the wing. I was a bit jealous as Pete and Julie enjoyed their relationship together while my girlfriend was far away at Duke. It was great to have Pete as the best man at my wedding!
My condolences to Julia and to the entire family.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Peter Smith. I know Peter from my 21 years working as an oceanographic scientist based in Atlantic Canada. Peter was an excellent scientist who made important contributions, especially to our understanding of the circulation on the Scotian shelf. He was also a really nice person to interact with. my Dad, Charlie Ross, was a longtime BIO colleague and passed along the notice of Peter's passing. Please accept my condolences but the loss of a partner or a parent is inconsolable. I hope you find ease with time. I have fond memories of your family and I wish you well. I do wish that I had known Peter played Rugby.

I was saddened and surprised by this news. Peter was an excellent scientist and a valuable member of BIO. He endured the difficulties of senior management in BIO during difficult times of budget restrictions and associated manpower constraints; he did so with competence and a cooperative spirit. Peter always provided me with clear-minded advice and support.

Dear Julia and family. Please accept my sincere condolences re the passing of you beloved Peter. I first met Peter when I was a graduate student at Dalhousie University and he joined my supervisory committee. Peter was instrumental in helping me complete my PhD. During this time I worked with Peter on the Fisheries Ecology Program. After I graduated I joined the science staff of the St. Andrew's Biological Station which is part of the DFO Maritimes Region and was tasked with leading the Marine Fish Division's gathering of offshore oceanographic data in the Scotian Shelf-Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy areas and conducted research exploring linkages between oceanographic conditions, fish distribution and fisheries stock assessments; all topics of interest to Peter. Several years later my program was transferred to the Oceanography Division's Coastal Oceanography Section, lead by Peter, and my emphasis shifted toward coastal oceanography and aquaculture. I was also in the Oceanography Division when Peter was Division Manager. I always found Peter to be a respected, fair and supportive supervisor and colleague from whom I learned a lot and from whom I received much quiet motivation and guidance. He will be fondly remembered and certainly was a major player in the formation and development of career. Many thanks go to him; you should all be very proud of the professional contributions he made to those who new and worked with him. He will not be forgotten.

We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Peter. We left Halifax in 1991, but have fond memories of getting to know Peter and Julia before then. Scientifically, Peter made major contributions to our understanding of the complicated dynamics of the coastal ocean, particularly the Scotian Shelf, and also played a vital role in interdisciplinary problems. Interacting with him was always a pleasure as he combined great expertise and insight with cheerfulness, generosity, and a sense of fun. He was a wonderful colleague, student supervisor, and friend.

Julia and family,
It has been sad and somewhat shocking to learn of the decline in Peter's health and his passing after him being so smart, energetic, knowledgeable, durable and congenial during his 4+ decades at BIO. He has undoubtedly been one of the leading physical oceanographic scientists and scientist-managers at BIO since its founding, through his scientific productivity and excellence, leadership, and liaison with other scientific groups and sectors within DFO, and across Canada and the NE US in government, universities and other. Our scientific and broader communities have been very fortunate that Peter and Julia settled in Nova Scotia and contributed so substantially. His commitment to his family was obvious and inspiring.
With sincere condolences,
John (and Lynn) Loder
