Obituary of Creighton Brown

Creighton Roy Brown 65, Sherbrooke Lake, Lunenburg County, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends on November 10, 2002. Born February 11, 1937 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Creighton was the son of the late Russell Creighton and Dorothy Roye (Browne) Brown. He is survived by his wife, Eliza Schurman; children, Janice (David Fralic) Fralic-Brown, and Paul (Paula MacInnis) Brown, both of Halifax; stepchildren, Eloise Graves, Halifax, Matthew and Nathan Graves, both of Ottawa, Ontario; sisters, Joan Fitch, Ottawa, Ontario, Nancy (Jim) Bodo, Port Coquitlam, BC; first wife, Shirley (Clayton) Leslie, Kentville; many beloved grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Graeme Creighton in 1991. Throughout his life Creighton was very active in the local community, regional voluntary organizations and social justice groups. He was a gifted adult educator, facilitator and activist. For many years Creighton was an integral member of Tatamagouche Centre, serving on its Board of Directors, various committees and providing leadership in many programs (focusing on men, aging, relationships, adult education, transformational leadership, community development, dealing with cancer, etc) Creighton traveled to Guatemala on several occasions and was involved in the Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network, an organization dedicated to promoting human rights in that country. His concern for youth led to him taking leadership roles with Canada World Youth, Katimavik, Heartwood, Youth on Purpose and other youth – focused associations. His working life also reflected his commitment to others – as an Anglican priest in Nova Scotia, then as a Field Officer and Regional Director with the Company of Young Canadians and as a Staff Development Officer with the federal government for many years. Most recently Creighton was active in community theatre, performing with the Flying Fish Co-op, the Take a Bow Performers and the Chester Theatre Group. He also sang with the New Germany and Area Men’s Choir and the Chester Studio Singers. Creighton touched many people during his life. He was a student and teacher of the Course in Miracles. His openness, creativity and willingness to explore all aspects of life was an inspiration to those he met. Creighton was probably best known for his wonderful sense of humor, big generous hugs and unconditional loving presence. He will be missed. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany. A celebration of Creighton’s life will be held at St. James Anglican Church Hall, Mahone Bay, on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 p.m. Memorial donations in Creighton’s memory may be made to the Tatamagouche Centre (Friends of the Centre Fund, R. R. #3, Tatamagouche, NS BOK 1VO) or to Heartwood Institute’s Creighton Brown Scholarship Fund for Emerging Youth Leaders (Heartwood, R. R. #7, Bridgewater, NS B4V 3J5).
