Obituary of Gilbert Lawrence Penney
Gilbert Lawrence Penney
89, of Upper Northfield, passed away Monday, July 18th in the home he was born in, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 63 years, and surrounded by family and friends. The last surviving male of his generation, he was the patriarch of the family who delighted many with his quick wit, teasing sense of humour, and ability to carry out countless acts of kindness. He lived his entire life on the land he inherited from previous generations. Stewardship of that land through farming and forestry were his life’s work. Farming, carpentry, and handyman work were his gifts, as well as writing rhyming poems for special occasions and playing a tune on his harmonica. He enjoyed travelling, relishing each new experience and the people he met. He was a member of Upper Northfield United Church until its closing and then of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Upper Northfield. Family and community were his passions shown through his support of the community hall, both churches, and the cemetery committee throughout his life. Many people treasure wooden items designed and built by his loving hands. He will be greatly missed. “People living deeply have no fear of death.” – Anais Nin. He was the son of the late Archibald and Lois (Morton) Penney. He is survived by his wife: Noreen (Fancy) Penney; children- Rosaleen (George) Smith, Belmont; Bradford (Louise) Penney, Stanley Section; Hester (Howard) Gibson, Watford; and Lauralee Penney, Kelly’s Cove; nine grandchildren-Dianna, Jonathan, Morgan, Amy, Elyse, Tiffany, Seth, Nathaniel, and Tyrus; eight great-grandchildren- Andrew, Brayden, Danica, Spencer, Anabelle, Evan, Ella, and Brady; sister- Margaret Spidle, Barss Corner. He was predeceased by his brothers-Wilfred, Clifford, Clive, Elmer, Victor, Roger, and Jacob; sisters-Lexie and Mable. Visitation will be from 7-9, Sunday, July 24th at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. The funeral will take place 2pm Monday, July 25 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Upper Northfield, Rev. William Gustafson officiating, assisted by Rev. Wayne Mitton with burial to follow at Upper Northfield Community Cemetery. Family flowers only please.
